1. How do you assess the performance of tourism in Greece this season?
Tourism has long been one of the main pillars of the Greek economy and a significant part of the population invests in it. This year’s season had positive elements, however, one cannot ignore the challenges that arose, especially due to the general accuracy that prevails and the reduced demand compared to previous years. This demonstrates that, in order not to find ourselves in a vulnerable position, it is crucial not to rely exclusively on tourism, but to invest in other sectors of the economy. In this way, we can ensure stronger foundations for our country and strengthen its long-term resilience.
2. What do you propose for a better performance of tourism?
I believe that it is crucial to promote Greek businesses, services and our local products, as these are what differentiate us and make us strong on an international level. Tourism is not just accommodation and hospitality; it is experience and culture. If we highlight the quality and uniqueness of Greek production, we can create a comprehensive tourism product with greater added value for the economy. Through our group in the European Parliament, the ECR, we are trying to emphasize this element in every possible way, so that Greece can gain an even stronger and more competitive position on the European and global tourism map.
3. How do you assess the developments in Trump’s policy regarding the imposition of tariffs and his policy in general regarding trade?
The policy that Trump is following is characterized by the effort to protect and strengthen domestic production and the American state as a whole by all means. This should be the priority of every leader, because only through such a strategy can the self-sufficiency and independence of a state be ensured. These very principles and values form the basis of the policy advocated by our Eurogroup, the ECR Group. In my opinion, similar care should be taken by the Greek Government, with targeted actions to promote and protect domestic producers, so that we do not unilaterally depend on imports or external factors.
4. What implications could there be for the Greek economy and what do you propose as the ECR Group?
The adoption of a corresponding policy to protect and strengthen domestic production would have, in my opinion, a very positive impact on the Greek economy. It would contribute substantially to our autonomy, strengthen the competitiveness of Greek products and offer new development opportunities in the primary and secondary sectors. As the ECR Group in the European Parliament, we are working systematically in this direction, promoting measures that protect European and, by extension, Greek production. Our goal is to create a more stable and fairer economic environment, where local producers will have the support they deserve.
5. What are your goals for the next season that begins in the European Parliament?
The goal of our group, the ECR, is to continue our struggle and our effort to support the primary sector in every possible way, but also to strengthen the self-sufficiency of the European Union. Only through the strengthening of these pillars can the Union acquire the strength and independence it deserves. For the next season, our goals focus on ensuring better conditions for producers, more growth opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises, and stronger tools to enable European societies to cope with global challenges.
