MEP Emmanuel Fragos talks to us about the new event of the “ECR Group” political team in Brussels

What about the event you held with the ECR Group?

The event we organized with our political team, the ECR Group, was central to the claim of German compensation to Greece for the crimes and disasters our country suffered during World War II. Through this event we wanted to highlight the historical, legal and moral burden of this claim, and to bring the issue to the forefront of European institutions. It was a clear position in favor of restoring historical justice, with the support of my European ECR colleagues.

Why do you think this event is important?

This event is an important step in the European issue. With our initiative, through the ECR, we internationalize the request and integrate it into a broader debate on historical memory and justice in Europe. Our goal is to exert political and institutional pressure on the issue of Germany and the EU.

Why is it important to pay German allowances?

Because it is primarily about the restoration of justice. Greece suffered incalculable catastrophes, hundreds of victims and economic plundering by the Nazi regime. The forced occupation loan, the slaughter of civilians, the destruction of infrastructure – all of this have not been sufficiently or at all compensated. The payment of German allowances is not a matter of revenge or economic benefit, but of recognition, apology and respect for historical truth and victims.

What are the next moves you will make as a political team on this issue?

Together with MEPs and members of the ECR, we are preparing a proposal for a resolution to the European Parliament for the official recognition of the issue and the need for compensation. We expect and hope to support many MEPs, Greeks, and other countries who have corresponding experiences or similar claims. Our goal is to create a strong pressure front so that the issue is not forgotten. Europe should not ignore its history and the need for justice.
